Fiona Hyslop


1964 -

Politician. Born in Irvine (North Ayrshire), Hyslop was educated in Alloway and at Ayr Academy, before studying at the University of Glasgow and the Scottish College of Textiles. After time working for an insurance company, while developing a second career in politics, she was elected to the Scottish Parliament as a List Member for the Lothians in 1999 representing the Scottish National Party (SNP). Hyslop served as Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning (2007-09) in the first Nationalist administration in Scotland, going on to serve as Minister for Culture and External Affairs from 2009. She was successfully elected as Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Linlithgow constituency in 2011, regarded as higher status than a List Member.
