Farmer, entrepreneur and politician. Born on the family farm of Westertown near Rothienorman in Aberdeenshire, Mackie was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and the University of Aberdeen. He built up the farm first rented by his grandfather from the Fyvie Estate in 1913 and innovated in terms of farm equipment, being the first farmer in the North of Scotland to own a combine harvester. Mackie served on Aberdeenshire County Council for many years from 1951, was Chairman of Aberdeen District Milk Marketing Board (1965-82) and the first Chairman of the North East of Scotland Development Authority (1969-75) doing much to develop the oil industry in the Aberdeen area, with strong connections to Texas in the USA. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire (1975-87), was knighted in 1982 and published his autobiography, A Lucky Chap, in 1993.
