(William Daniel) Dan McCafferty

1946 -

Vocalist. Born in Dunfermline (Fife), McCafferty trained as an engineer. He worked with a local band called The Shadettes and was persuaded to substitute when the lead singer left suddenly in 1968. Success came and the band soon changed its name to Nazareth. A first album appeared in 1971 and the band went on to have seven top 40 UK chart hits between 1973 and 1979. McCafferty co-wrote some of Nazareth's biggest hits including Broken Down Angel, Dream On and Bad Bad Boy. Notable albums include Razamanaz (1973), Loud 'n' Proud (1973), Hair of the Dog (1975), Malice in Wonderland (1980), No Jive (1991) through to Rock 'n' Roll Telephone (2014), recorded in Rosyth. McCafferty has also released two solo albums: Dan McCafferty (1975) and Into the Ring (1987). Worsening health brought his retirement in 2013, after fronting the band for 45 years.
