Kenneth (Kenny) Ireland


1945 - 2014

Actor. Born in Paisley, the son of an RAF serviceman who was killed on a mission when Ireland was just five months of age. He was educated at Paisley Grammar School and took an apprenticeship with the thread manufacturer J. & P. Coats. He trained as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and helped to establish the Lyceum Youth theatre in Edinburgh, going on to served as artistic director of the Royal Lyceum Theatre (1993 - 2003). His work for television included the comedy sketch show Victoria Wood As Seen On TV (1985-87), the sitcom Life Without George (1987), the political drama House of Cards (1990) and ITV sitcom Benidorm (2007-14). Ireland appeared on film including Local Hero (1983), directed by Bill Forsyth, Peter Greenaway's Drowning by Numbers (1988) and The Big Man (1990). He also directed numerous stage plays.
