George Lauder


1837 - 1924

Steel-maker. Born in Dunfermline (Fife), the son of a shop-keeper, Lauder was raised alongside his cousin, the industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1919). He studied engineering at the University of Glasgow, where one of his lecturers was William Thomson, Lord Kelvin (1824 - 1907). He emigrated to the USA at the invitation of Carnegie and became his most trusted advisor and the second-largest shareholder in the Carnegie Steel Corporation behind Carnegie himself.

Lauder died an exceptionally wealthy man in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he is buried in Putnam Cemetery. Lauder College in Dunfermline (now part of Fife College) is named in his honour.
