Agnes Maclehose

(Clarinda)

1758 - 1841

The Clarinda with whom Robert Burns (1759-96) famously corresponded. She was born in Glasgow, the daughter of a surgeon, Andrew Craig. Known as 'Nancy' to her friends, she married, but left her cruel husband and moved to Edinburgh in 1782. Burns had an affair with her (1788), which he summed up in his song Aye Fond Kiss. In their correspondence, they adopted the pseudonyms of Clarinda and Sylvander. He dedicated several of his other poems and songs to her.

Agnes Maclehose is buried in the Canongate Kirkyard.
