British army officer who succeeded General George Wade (1673 - 1748) as HM Inspector of Roads for Scotland in 1732. He continued Wade's programme of construction of roads and bridges, building more than 900 miles / 1450 km of road and 600 bridges. He served as Quartermaster to General Sir John Cope (1690 - 1760) during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion and then as Deputy Governor of Inverness Castle from 1747 until his death, living at Cradlehall House.
