Noble and Guardian. Following the death of King Alexander III (1241 - 1286), six lords and bishops, the so-called Guardians of the Realm, were elected to act as regents ruling for the infant Queen Margaret (c.1283-90). Comyn was one of these. However, the result of this inter-regnum was instability, with a dozen individuals (the Competitors) vying for power. Comyn married King John Balliol's sister (Eleanor), gave shelter to Balliol when defeated by King Edward I (1239 - 1307), and was imprisoned with him in the Tower of London. He joined William Wallace (1274 - 1305) to fight for Scottish independence following his release.
