Robert (Bertie) Auld


1938 - 2021

Footballer and football manager. Born in Maryhill (Glasgow), the eldest of eight children, Auld found success in football from a young age, joining his local club (Maryhill Harp) at the age of 15. He became a professional player with Celtic in 1955, was called to play for his country on three occasions (1959) and went on to play for Dumbarton and Birmingham City before returning to Celtic (1965-71). He was one of Jock Stein's Lisbon Lions, who won the 1967 European Cup Final for Celtic against Inter Milan. He completed his playing career with Hibernian (1971-73). He went on to become a successful manager at Partick Thistle (1974-80, 1986), Hibernian (1980-82), Hamilton Academicals (1982-83) and Dumbarton (1988).

Auld was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2009. His funeral was broadcast to fans at Celtic's Parkhead stadium.
