Humza Yousaf


1985 -

Politician and First Minister of Scotland. Born in Glasgow, the son of immigrants who came to Scotland in the 1960s, Humza educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School going on to study politics at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 2007. He joied the Scottish National Party while at university. After time as a political assistant and then SNP Communications Officer, he was elected as a Member of the Scottish Parliament for Glasgow via the list system in 2011. Alex Salmond (b. 1954) appointed Yousaf as Minister for External Affairs and International Development in 2012, becoming Minister for Europe and International Development in 2014 under Nicola Sturgeon (b. 1970). He served as Minister for Transport and the Islands (2016-18), Cabinet Secretary for Justice (2018-21) and finally Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care (2021-23) before being elected as Party Leader and First Minister following Sturgeon's retirement.
