Alloysious (Ally) Massaquoi


1987 -

Musician and singer. Born in Monrovia (Liberia), Massaquoi was brought to Edinburgh by his mother at the age of four to escape the civil war in their home country. He was educated at Boroughmuir High School, where he met Kayus Bankole (b. 1987). With Graham Hastings (b. 1987), the pair founded the band Young Fathers in 2008. Their second mix-tape Tape Two won the Scottish Album of the Year Award in 2013, while their debut album Dead (2013) won a Mercury prize the following year. Subsequent albums were Cocoa Sugar (2018), which won a second Scottish Album of the Year Award, and Heavy Heavy in 2023. They have also recorded material for computer games and produced music videos.
