Benny Lynch

1913 - 1946

Undoubtedly Scotland's greatest boxer. Benny Lynch was born in the Glasgow Gorbals and became the first undisputed world flyweight champion after capturing both the world title (1935) and then the American title (1937). However his decline came as quickly as his success. As he succumbed to alcohol, he was reduced to earning a living by fighting in boxing booths. He died in poverty and a recluse aged only 33. Lynch was inducted as one of the first members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
