John McDouall Stuart

Explorer and Surveyor of Australia. Born in Dysart (Fife) and educated in Edinburgh. He went to Australia in 1839 and became the first to cross that country from South to North, and back again! Mount Stuart is named after him, as is the Stuart Highway which connects Darwin with Adelaide. He was awarded their Gold Medal by the Royal Geographical Society (1861).
