Thomas Allan


1777 - 1833

Banker, newspaper proprietor and mineralogist. Born in Edinburgh, Allan lived at Lauriston Castle. He published scientific papers on the theories of James Hutton (1726-97) and built a vast collection of mineral specimens. He first discovered the mineral Allanite, which was named after him.
