Inventor of the invisible hinge. Sandy was born the son of an inn-keeper in Alyth (Perth and Kinross), where he lived his life. Despite being badly crippled, which resulted in him being confined to bed for much of his life, he gained local fame for his mechanical skills. He constructed a variety of items including clocks, musical instruments, agricultural implements and optical devices. Sandy inherited the inn (now the Alyth Hotel) from his father and 'held court' there daily.
