Murdoch Stewart

(2nd Duke of Albany)

c.1362 - 1425

Regent of Scotland. Son of Robert Stewart (c.1340 - 1419), the 1st Duke of Albany, Murdoch Stewart inherited power from his father but not his intelligence or political skills and thus the economy and administration suffered under his rule. As soon as King James I was released by his English captors and assumed the throne of Scotland, he stamped his authority by arresting Murdoch and his sons, trying and executing them at Stirling Castle. They are buried in the Church of the Black Friars, Stirling.
