John Stuart


(1st Marquess and 4th Earl of Bute)

1744 - 1814

Noble. Eldest son of John Stuart (1713 - 92), who was a British Prime Minister, the son became 1st Marquess in 1796. The Stuarts of Bute are hereditary Sheriffs of Bute and Arran, and Keepers of Rothesay Castle. The family are directly descended from King Robert II (1316 - 90), the first of the Stuart dynasty of Scottish kings. John Stuart was born at Mount Stuart and educated at Harrow, Winchester and Oxford. He became a noted politician, serving in the House of Commons until he was created Lord Cardiff in 1776. He went on to serve as an Ambassador in Italy and Spain. On the death of his father in 1792, he inherited substantial estates in South Wales, which were significantly developed by his grandson John Crichton-Stuart (1793 - 1848), the 2nd Marquess. He died in Geneva.
