Archibald Campbell


(2nd Earl of Argyll)

Noble. The son of Colin Campbell, the 1st Earl, he became Lord High Chancellor of Scotland (1483), governor of Tarbert Castle, Lieutenant-General in Argyll and the Isles (1500) and Heritable Sheriff of the South-West (1509). Through these positions his clan rose to a position of supremacy, equalled only by the Gordons in the north. He fell at Flodden Field (1513) with his king, James IV (1473 - 1513). His younger son gave rise to the Earls of Cawdor.
