Field Marshal John Campbell


(5th Duke of Argyll)

1723 - 1806

Soldier and politician. He was the son of John Campbell (d. 1770), the 4th Duke. A Member of Parliament, who was appointed Field-Marshal in the British Army (1763). He lived in Inveraray Castle with his wife, Elizabeth, a celebrated Irish beauty, and the couple were parents to both George, the 6th Duke (1766 - 1839) and John, the 7th Duke (1777 - 1847). He brought master-mason Robert Mylne (1734 - 1811) to Inveraray to re-model the interior. He also rebuilt Rosneath Castle (1803), which was demolished in 1961.
