James Douglas-Hamilton
(5th Duke of Hamilton)

1703 - 1743

Politician. Educated at Winchester. Douglas-Hamilton was styled the Marquess of Clydesdale until his father was killed in a duel in Hyde Park (London) which made him 5th Duke of Hamilton (1712). A Tory politician and, like his father, he had Jacobite sympathies and was intrigued by the exiled Stuart dynasty. Douglas-Hamilton commissioned William Adam (1689 - 1748) to built the Chatelherault Hunting Lodge on his Hamilton estate. He was Lord of the Bedchamber (1727) until he resigned on account of his opposition to Horace Walpole (1733).

He died in Bath (England).
