Sir William Purves


1931 -

Banker. Born in Kelso (Scottish Borders), Purves was educated at Kelso High School before beginning his career as a bank clerk. This career was interrupted in the early 1950s by National Service, during which he served with distinction in Korea, gaining a DSO. He joined the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) in 1954, advancing to become its Chief Executive (1986) and Chairman (1987). He retired in 1998, from what had become one of the world's largest banks. He has also served as a Director of a number of other companies.

Purves was a member of the Hong Kong's Executive Council, the territory's policy-making body. He was awarded a CBE in 1990, knighted in 1993 and now lives in London.
