Francis Garden


(Lord Gardenstone)

1721 - 1793

Judge. Born in Edinburgh, the the second son of Alexander Garden of Troup, Garden was educated at the University of Edinburgh and was admitted an advocate in 1744. He rose to become a distinguished Court of Session judge and Sheriff of The Mearns, with an estate at Laurencekirk. Known for his eccentricity, Garden used to allow his favourite pig to warm his bed before he retired for the evening! He was also noted for improving the living conditions for his estate workers. Garden also maintained a house in the Morningside district of Edinburgh, where he died. He is buried in Greyfriars kirkyard.
