Rev. Prof. James Moffatt


1870 - 1944

Ecclesiastical historian. Born in Glasgow, Moffatt studied at the University of Glasgow and trained for the ministry at the Free Church College in the city. He gained his doctorate from the University of St Andrews in 1902, and preached in Dundonald and then Broughty Ferry until 1911. He was appointed Professor of Greek and New Testament Exegesis at Oxford, but returned to Glasgow where he served as Professor of Church History from 1915 to 1927. Finally, he was appointed Washburn Professor of Church History at the Union Theological Seminary in New York (USA) in 1927 and remained in that post until his retiral in 1939. He is remembered for producing one of the most widely used modern translations of the Bible. He died in New York, but his ashes were returned to Scotland.
