Overview of Carnwath

A village of South Lanarkshire, Carnwath stands at an altitude of 220m (770 feet) in the Clyde valley, 7 miles (11 km) east of Lanark. Sat in a commanding position, its 12th Century motte was the largest in Lanarkshire. A mediaeval church was made collegiate in 1424 by Sir Thomas Sommerville whose family remained in the locality until the 16th Century. Carnwath became a burgh of barony in 1451 and later developed in association with road and rail facilities. Now a commuter settlement, it has businesses associated with coaches, clinical research and the manufacture of dairy produce.
