Barassie
(New Kilmarnock)
South Ayrshire
Barassie
©2013 Gazetteer for Scotland
A village on the coast of South Ayrshire, Barassie lies 1¼ miles (2 km) to the north of Troon. Initially comprising a farm and a mill on the Barassie Burn, a settlement was established here in the mid 1830s, near the junction of two railway lines. Barassie developed as a centre of railway carriage and wagon repair. Both the junction and Barassie Station remain but the workshops closed in 1972. An 18-hole golf course was founded in 1887 and in the 20th century Barassie expanded as a northern suburb of Troon with the development of the Barassie Garden Village. Barassie became a weekend retreat for the wealthy of Kilmarnock, earning itself the alternative name of New Kilmarnock.
