The village of Abernethy is located 3 miles (5 km) west of Newburgh in Perth and Kinross. Located within the village is a round tower, which rises to a height of 22.5m (74 feet) and is similar to the one in Brechin, although inferior in size and grandeur. It has characteristics similar to the round towers which can be found in Ireland, and as such is believed to have been built with Irish influence. It dates from the period AD 850 to AD 950. To the northeast of the village at Carpow, on the southern banks of the River Tay, lie the remains of a Roman fortress and naval base. The hamlets of Glenfoot and Aberargie were once part of the same parish as Abernethy.
