A picturesque agricultural hamlet of rural Midlothian, Carrington lies 2 miles (3 km) west of Gorebridge and 2½ miles (4 km) southeast of Rosewell. The former parish church, with its square tower, dates from 1711.
Arniston House, which dates from the mid-18th C., lies a half-mile (1 km) to the southeast. To the northeast lies the Mausoleum of the Ramsays of Whitehill, built in the early 18th C.
Carrington was named the best-kept village in Scotland in 1978. The hamlet is also known as Primrose, the family name of the Earls of Rosebery.
