Cove Bay

(Cove)
Aberdeen City

A large commuter village on the coast of Aberdeen City Council Area, Cove Bay (or simply Cove) was once a modest fishing village in the northeastern corner of Kincardineshire but is now effectively a suburb of Aberdeen, located 3 miles (5 km) south of the city centre, between the A956 and the North Sea coast. The village began around a natural harbour, with a pier and breakwater built in 1878. A fish-meal factory operated here from 1894 to 1937. The railway passes through, but the station closed in 1956. The village grew rapidly from the 1970s as a dormitory settlement, with its population rising almost ten-fold by 2001. Facilities include a post-office, two primary schools, a health-centre, library and shops. A few boats still land shell-fish. To the north is the Altens Industrial Estate with fish processing, printing, engineering and oil-related industries.
