A northern suburb of Glasgow, Possilpark lies to the north of the River Clyde and to the east of Maryhill. It was laid out by Walter MacFarlane & Co. of the Saracen Foundry in Anderston which acquired the Possil estate in 1867 and developed in association with coal mining, iron works, railway engineering and pottery works. at the time it was regarded as one of the best laid out and planned within the city. In the 1950s and 1960s the area was blighted by industrial decline and today very few of its industries have survived. Civic improvements have been generated since the mid-1980s by a local housing co-operative which developed a community festival. The former Possil Loch is now a nature reserve. In 2003, most of the housing stock was transferred to the Glasgow Housing Association with the intention of providing much needed improvements.
