A residential suburb on the southern edge of the city of Edinburgh, Fairmilehead lies between the Braids and the city bypass. It was largely developed in latter half of the 20th century. Since 1936 the National Trust for Scotland has maintained the Caiy Stone, a 2.7-metre (9-feet) tall prehistoric cup-marked stone also known as General Kay's Monument or the Kel Stone. The stone possibly marks the site of an ancient battle, possibly between the Picts and the Romans. The Princess Margaret Rose Hospital was built here in 1929, originally as a children's orthopaedic hospital, but closed in 1998. The Hillburn Roadhouse was built in the 1930s. This Art Deco entertainment venue was one of several roadhouses built on the edge of the city designed to meet the needs of a car-driving middle class. This became the Fairmile Inn but was demolished in 2012 to be replaced by the Pentland Outdoor Centre.
