Broomieknowe

An affluent district of Bonnyrigg in Midlothian, Broomieknowe is located at the northern end of the High Street and takes its name from the summit on which it lies. It principally comprises 19th C. stone-built detached properties which are now protected as a conservation area. It gives its name to various street names (such as Broomieknowe, Upper Broomieknowe, Lower Broomieknowe, Broomieknowe Gardens and Broomieknowe Park). It also gave its name to Broomieknowe Golf Club and to a station on the Esk Valley Railway, which operated between 1868 and 1951. The railway passed beneath Broomieknowe within the Broomieknowe Tunnel which remains extant, although sealed. To the west of the western portal of this tunnel is the stately Lasswade Viaduct which once took the line across the River North Esk.

The landscape painter William McTaggart (1835 - 1910) lived here.
