Bearsden

(New Kilpatrick, East Kilpatrick)
East Dunbartonshire

Primarily a fashionable and affluent residential suburb of Glasgow, which lies 5 miles (8 km) to the southeast, Bearsden is situated on the line of the Antonine Wall, west of the River Kelvin and north of the Forth and Clyde Canal. Only designated a Parliamentary Burgh in 1958, it was originally a small Kirkton known as New or East Kilpatrick, after the parish in which it lay. Bearsden developed with the coming of the railway in 1863 and the town takes its name from the station which was built here. During the 20th century Bearsden expanded considerably as a residential suburb with rail links to Central Glasgow, although the town centre remains modest. Buildings of interest include the Roman Bath House, Kilmardinny House (c.1800), Bearsden Academy, Boclair Academy, the former Canniesburn Hospital and the Schaw Home (now the Lynedoch Nursing Home) which was built in 1895 as a convalescent home for patients from Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Priests were trained at Scotus College, while the former Notre Dame Roman Catholic Teaching College was renamed St. Andrew's College in 1981, later absorbed into the University of Glasgow but much of the striking modernist building was demolished in 2007 to make way for a new building for Bearsden Academy.
