Newmilns

East Ayrshire

Situated adjacent to the village of Greenholm on the River Irvine in East Ayrshire, the village of Newmilns was established in 1490 by Campbell of Loudon, and later became a centre for Covenanters. In the 19th Century the village developed as a textile centre for muslin and lace; in the 20th century it produced crucibles for steel production. For its written support of the Union cause during the American Civil War in the 1860s, the USA Congress later presented the village with an American flag.

Important buildings include Newmilns Tower (c.1530) and the Town House (1739). Newmilns is the second of the three 'valley burghs', the others being Galston and Darvel.
