Lybster Harbour

A fishing village on the east coast of Caithness, Lybster lies off the A99 road, 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Wick. Established in 1802 by General Patrick Sinclair, its long Main Street overlooks its harbour below at Invershore. Sinclair's son continued to expand the village, naming the four sides of the square after Whig politicians of the 1830s (Althorpe, Grey, Jeffrey and Russel). By then Lybster was the third largest herring port in Scotland after Wick and Fraserburgh. In 1903 the Wick and Lybster Light Railway opened primarily to export fish, but this closed in 1944 unable to compete with the new coastal road.
