A locality in N Midlothian, Woolmet is located a quarter-mile (0.4 km) northeast of Danderhall and a similar distance northwest of Newton. Once lying to the west, Woolmet House was a substantial L-plan tower house, built in 1686 for the Biggar family. It survived until 1954 when, undermined by nearby coal mines, it was demolished. Woolmet Colliery was sunk by the Niddrie and Benhar Coal Company in 1898 and operated until 1966. At its peak, this mine employed 960 men and produced more than 200,000 tons of coal per year. It was replaced the much larger and more modern Monktonhall Colliery complex, which opened in 1967 immediately to the east, although the Woolmet buildings were retained for a time as a training centre.
Moorfield Cottages on the Millerhill Road represent a solitary row of mineworker's residences.
