Faslane
Argyll and Bute

A port and naval base situated around Faslane Bay in the Gare Loch. It was developed as Military Port No.1 to act as an emergency harbour responsible for importing supplies from North America and sending troops around the globe during World War II, while the ports of the South of England were exposed to enemy bombing. It began operations in 1942 but was not completed until the following year. The naval base continues to court controversy as the home-base of Britain's nuclear submarines.
