Uig comprises a collection of small settlements forming a remote and scattered community centred on a beautiful sandy bay on the west coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Timsgarry (Gael: Timsgearraidh) is the principal township, containing Uig Primary School, Uig Community Centre and Museum, Uig War Memorial, a community fire station and Uig Community Shop. The ancient Dun Borranish fort looks out onto Uig Bay (Gael: Camas Uig) in whose sandy dunes were found in 1831 the famous Lewis chessmen made of walrus ivory in the 12th century. Today these are divided between the collections of the British Museum in London and the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The former Parish of Uig was much larger. The parish church, once located in Timsgarry, now occupies the former Free Church building at the head of Loch Miavaig, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the east. A modern Free Presbyterian Church is also located here.
