Uig
Western Isles

A remote and scattered community surrounding a beautiful sandy bay on the west coast of Lewis. Timsgarry (Gael: Timsgearraidh) is the principal township in the area and the ancient Dun Borranish fort looks out onto Uig Bay (Gael: Camas Uig) in whose sandy dunes were found in 1831 the three famous Lewis chessmen made of walrus ivory in the 12th century. Today these are divided between the collections of the British Museum in London and the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
