Sandness


Shetland

A scattered settlement in the most westerly district of the Mainland .island of Shetland in the Northern Isles, situated 29 miles (46.6 km) northwest of Lerwick near the end of the Trona Scord road (A971). Sandness (pronounced 'san-ness') comprises a group of crofting townships including Norby, Huxter and Melby. A mile (1.5 km) offshore is the island of Papa Stour. Shetland's only commercial woollen mill opened here in 1981, while restored vernacular water-mills at Huxter form a tourist attraction.
