Walls

Shetland

A crofting and fishing township in the most westerly district of the Mainland of Shetland in the Northern Isles, situated 25 miles (40.2 km) northwest of Lerwick. It lies at the head of two voes or bays that open out into Vaila Sound, overlooking a natural harbour well sheltered by the island of Vaila. Taking its name from the Old Norse for 'voes', its spelling was anglicised to its present form because it sounded like Wa's, the Scottish pronunciation of 'walls'. The ferry to the remote island of Foula sails from here.
