Monktonhall

East Lothian

Once a separate hamlet, Monktonhall is now a southwestern suburb of Musselburgh in East Lothian, lying between the mainline railway and the River Esk, 5½ miles (9 km) east southeast of Edinburgh. The Musselburgh Golf Course occupies Shire Haugh to the east and Monktonhall Colliery, one of the last deep mines in Scotland, once lay 1¼ miles (2 km) to the southwest until it closed in 1998.
