10 February 2011:
1. Neil Boyd Watson McEacharn was not born in born Garlieston (Dumfries and Galloway but in Kensington (to be precise 38 Redcliffe Square) London on 28 October 1884. I have a copy of his birth certificate to substantiate this fact. which I can copy to you if required?

2. ??tienne MacDonald, 1st duc de Taranto was not an ancestor of Neil Boyd Watson McEacharn but rather he was a kinsman. Neil Boyd Watson McEacharn's own book "The Villa Taranto : a Scotsman's garden in Italy" page 14 specifically mentions 1st duc de Taranto was a kinsman..

In support of this:

??tienne MacDonald (1765-1840), 1st duc de Taranto had only one son,

Alexandre MacDonald (1824-1881), 2nd duc de Taranto who also had only one son,

Fergus MacDonald (1854-1912) ), 3nd duc de Taranto who had no children.

You'll notice on your page http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/people/famousfirst3016.html that Neil Boyd Watson McEacharn's father was Sir Malcolm Donald McEacharn (1852-1910).

Sir Malcolm's father was Malcolm McEacharn (1819???1854) whose father was Donald McEacharn

Sir Malcolm Donald McEacharn was therefore not a son of Alexandre MacDonald (1824-1881), 2nd duc de Taranto and hence ??tienne MacDonald (1765-1840), 1st duc de Taranto was not an ancestor of Neil Boyd Watson McEacharn.

All sources I've come across relating to the Villa Taranto mentions it was named after Neil's ancestor, Etienne-Jacques-Joseph-Alexandre MacDonald. I'm assuming the original source for your Web Page on Captain Neil Boyd Watson McEacharn was http://www.villataranto.it/eng/storia.asp which unfortunately is in error.

Would it please be possible for you to amend the details on the Captain to reflect the factual details supplied above?

If you should require further details please let me know and I'll endeavour to provide the answers.
