03 February 2009:
The information about the origin of the two petrol locomotives is incorrect. The petrol locos were ordered new in 1922 from the Motor Rail and Tramcar Company Ltd of Bedford. They were both 20 HP 4 wheel chain driven locos powered by Dorman 2JO petrol engines - Manufacurer's Works numbers 2097 and 2171. The MR&T Co Ltd had already equipped another 'grouse railway' for Sir Archie Birkmyre at Dalmunzie House near the Spittal of Glenshee which ran until 1980.

I extracted the information when transcribing the manufacturer's records in the 1970's.

A third loco was purchased second hand in September 1969 from Joseph Arnold & Sons Ltd of Leighton Buzzard who had several dozen 2ft gauge petrol & diesel locos working in sand quarries. This one was built by Motor Rail Ltd of Bedford (successors to the MRT Co Ltd) as a 20/28HP 4 wheeled diesel loco - Works number 8700 of 1941.

The grouse railwy was disused but still all intact, when I first visited it in the late 1970's.
- Ian Jolly
