Douglas West

South Lanarkshire

A former collier settlement, Douglas West is located on high ground a mile (1.5 km) west northwest of Douglas in South Lanarkshire and on the opposite side of the Douglas Water. The Douglas Castle Colliery operated here between 1912 and 1959, with a workforce of up to 416 men. A coal bing remains and a large open-cast mine is now worked 2 miles (3 km) to the northwest. A railway station was established at Douglas West on the Muirkirk Branch of the Caledonian Railway, but both station and line closed in 1964. There was also once an outdoor centre here and the building remains, now converted to private housing. Also located here is the control building and entrance to Hagshaw Hill Wind Farm, which is centred 1½ miles (2.5 km) to the west.
