Old Dailly

South Ayrshire

A small village of South Ayrshire, Old Dailly lies to the south of the Water of Girvan, 3 miles (5 km) east of Girvan. It developed in association with farming and quarrying. Near the ford at Old Dailly stands the Baron's Stone, a granite boulder 12m (39 feet) in circumference and estimated to weigh 37 tonnes. Carried down by glaciers from the hills above Loch Doon, this glacial erratic was anciently a place of assembly and seat of justice. Camregan Castle, Killochan Castle, Penkill Castle and the emparked mansion of Bargany are close by. The painter John Thomson was born in the parish in 1718.
