Overview of Moulin

A hamlet in a parish of the same name in Perth and Kinross, Moulin lies a mile (1.5 km) to the north of Pitlochry on the road to Kirkmichael. Its name derives from the Gaelic, Maohlinn, meaning 'small rounded hill'. Formerly the largest settlement in the area, the village, now a conservation area, declined after the military road was rerouted in 1727. It has a late 17th-century inn, now the Moulin Hotel with a small brewery in the old coach-house behind; a church rebuilt in 1831 and again after a fire in 1873 and, close by, the remains of the 14th-century Black Castle of Moulin, said to have been destroyed c.1500 for fear of the plague. The churchyard contains a crusader's grave said to date from the 12th century.
