A former mining village of North Lanarkshire, Wattston lies 3 miles (5 km) south southeast of Cumbernauld and a similar distance north northeast of Airdrie. The village of Greengairs lies immediately to the east. Although the coal pits had closed by the 1950s, open cast mining is still carried out to the south.
