A small village on the eastern boundary of Perth and Kinross, Ardler is situated 3 miles (5 km) east of Coupar Angus, to the east of the A 94 road. The village was founded in the 1830s by the radical thinker and politician George Kinloch (1775 - 1833) who planned to develop a marketing centre for Strathmore on the railway line linking Dundee and Coupar Angus. Originally naming it Washington after the American president, Kinloch intended the streets to take the names of well known political and philosophical heroes from William Wallace to Benjamin Franklin. Kinloch did not live to see the completion of the village which failed to prosper.
