Garnkirk

North Lanarkshire

A scattered settlement of North Lanarkshire, Garnkirk is located a mile (1.5 km) southwest of Muirhead. Once the location of works which exploited extensive local fire clay deposits, the Glasgow and Garnkirk railway came in 1831. A station opened here six years later but closed in 1960, although the line remains linking Glasgow with Coatbridge. Garnkirk Moss lies to the northeast, by Muirhead.
