Gartcosh

North Lanarkshire

A former industrial village of North Lanarkshire, Gartcosh lies nearly 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Coatbridge and west of the M73 motorway. Shown as a modest farmstead and isolated railway station on the Caledonian Railway line on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (surveyed 1858-59), it had grown to a small village with its own school in association with a fireclay works which opened to the west in 1863 and an iron and steel works which began operation to the east two years later. British Steel took over the mill in 1967 and operated it until its closure in 1986. A new railway station opened here in 2005, on the line linking Glasgow and Cumbernauld. The village grew markedly with the development of 300 homes at Heathfield Park to the southwest in 2007. This area takes Scottish castles as its road naming scheme; namely Borthwick, Craigmillar, Drumlanrig, Duart, Dunollie, Inveraray, Kildrummy, Linlithgow, Lochmaben, Scalloway, Skibo, Threave and Urquhart. The Scottish Crime Campus opened in 2014 within Gartcosh Industrial Park, on the site of the former steel-works.
