Whiting Bay

North Ayrshire

A village on the east coast of the island of Arran Whiting Bay lies 3 miles (5 km) south of Lamlash. The original crofting settlement on a raised beach at Kiscadale was cleared of its tenants in the 1830s and in the years that followed Whiting Bay developed as a fishing village with a ferry link to Saltcoats on the Ayrshire coast. From 1860 a new ferry bringing tourists from Ardrossan encouraged the building of villas and holiday homes and the laying out of an 18-hole golf course in 1895. Despite the closure of the pier in 1957, Whiting Bay continued to thrive as a tourist resort with a summer ferry service to Holy Island.
